Trucking Firms Struggle to Balance Service Requests, Shipping Pricing

FAYETTEVILLE — Customers expect more services from transportation and logistics firms, but still want low freight costs, according to a panel discussion at a University of Arkansas conference.

Wes Kemp, president and chief operating officer of Fort Smith-based ABF Freight System Inc.; Pat Reed, executive vice president and chief operating officer for FedEx Freight; and Gary Whicker, senior vice president of engineering services for Lowell-based J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., comprised the panel.

They spoke to about 130 people during a Tuesday conference at the Supply Chain Management Research Center at the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas.

John Ozment, a University of Arkansas professor, asked the trucking firm executives how their companies adjusted in a down economy and if they cut back services to save costs.
