A western beltway that skirts Northwest Arkansas’ major cities is one step closer to paving.
The Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission policy committee Thursday approved an amendment to add a feasibility study of the proposal to the area transportation improvement program.
“It’s going to be a study about whether this project is worthy of further consideration, whether the whole concept really makes sense. Nothing more,” said Jeff Hawkins, executive director and senior planner for the regional commission.
The beltway would run parallel to and about a mile from the two-lane, north-south Harmon Road and is designed to relieve some of the traffic on Interstate 540. It would pass through western Benton and Washington counties and connect with I-540 at Bella Vista to the north and Greenland to the south.
